Perfume bottles. Store or throw away?

Try today to find once popular bottles from the sets “Kremlin”, “Lights of Moscow”, “Red Moscow”, trial bottles that seemed incalculable? These smells were familiar to many, they were not something out of reach. And one thing can be said about the durability of fragrances: bottles still keep the smell, decades later.

Interesting fact-perfume bottles were known both in Ancient Egypt and in Ancient Rome. Vintage perfume bottles with their elegant curves and shimmering facets in the light are a kind of reminder of elegant and luxurious times, evidence that in the past, the dressing room or dressing table of a lady was a place where beauty was restored.

Until some time, aromatic liquids and bottles for them existed separately: perfumers made perfumes and toilet waters, and jewelers, potters, glassblowers — bottles. The connection took place in the hands of the owner of both. But if a person did not have money for either, they could get a portion of perfume from the machine: throw a coin — and you will be enveloped in a cloud with a pleasant smell (by choice).

Since the XIX century, bottles were made by order of perfume manufacturers and became an inseparable part of the fragrance.

Usually perfume bottles have a round base and a stopper, most often made of the same material. The bottle is filled with an aromatic liquid, then tipped over to moisten the cork, the cork is removed and it touches the skin to convey the scent of perfume. Later, for aromatic liquids (Cologne, eau de toilette) began to use sprayers.

The bottles were made of ceramics, glass, and metals. Over time, materials, finishes, and styles have changed. As art historians write, Victorian bottles (1837-1901) were made of glass, they were distinguished by silver caps. Edwardian bottles (1901-1910) were more often made of metal-gold or silver-and decorated with ornaments.

The cameo style bottles have a matte surface, a colored porcelain composition and white relief details: silhouettes of people, flowers, flying cherubs.

Bottles of Art Nouveau style resemble Tiffany lamps, popular in the late XIX and early XX centuries: flowers and animals, elegant shapes and smooth curves. It is known that Tiffany produced a series of bottles, which feature a twisted base, silver caps that cover the crystal stoppers.

The Art Deco bottles were not so fancy, or rather, their shape approximated the correct geometry.

Vessels for perfumes were made not only for dressing tables and rooms. At the beginning of the XX century, toilet bottles-pendants that were produced by famous perfumers, such as Chanel, were very popular. Her company made such vessels with jewelry, of course, with branded perfumes.

One of the outstanding designers and manufacturers of perfume bottles was the French jeweler and glassblower Rene Lalique (1865-1940). He was the author of crystal bottles for perfumes of famous companies Coty, Nina Richie. In 1992, lalik started producing its own perfume.

Once bottles were made to individual orders in small quantities, but technological progress has made it possible to get such dishes from glass manufacturers. In England, these suppliers were Thomas Webb and sons and the Stevens and Williams glass company, which made both small bottles and miniature ones that could be put in a theatrical lady’s purse.

Sprayers are a nice addition to the bottle. They remind you of fun in the toilet corner of your mother or grandmother in the days when spray guns were very popular — from the middle of the XIX century to the 60s of XX-th. The sprayers were of different shapes, colors, and materials. And although pears (which pump air to spray perfume) lose elasticity with age, sprayers are still interesting. (You can find a suitable replacement on the Internet, and even if it is not accurate from a historical point of view, you can wrap yourself in a cloud of fragrance.)

The history of the perfume bottle shows how inventive glassblowers, artists, and jewelers were in making such a small thing that combined a purely prosaic function — to contain an aromatic substance, and the function of interior decoration (if the bottle was placed on the dressing table) or a lady (if she hung the bottle around her neck as a pendant).
